Yoan Yoga Yoan Yoga

What happens during Active Birth and Yoga Class.

The classes are useful at any stage of pregnancy. It is advisable to attend at least six classes to get optimal benefit from the course. Many women attend as early as fourteen weeks, and then all through the pregnancy to as late as fourty two weeks. This enables women to maintain a relaxed and peaceful pregnancy, and to form valuable friendships with other women.  It is, however, never to late to start! Attending for the last couple of month of pregnancy is still very valuable.

The classes are small. There are introductions of any new participants, and in the first half hour of class, we drink tea and share any thoughts, questions or areas of concern.

This is a good time to bring up issues and topics relating to pregnancy and birth. Classes are small and supportive, and create a safe and comfortable environment to share views.

Sometimes there is a visit from mother/parents with a new baby. These visits are very valuable to the class, as it is important to hear all kinds of birth experiences, to gain a balanced and realistic view of the birth process.

There are regular sessions on the Birth ball, where the Yoga is practiced using a Ball specifically made for pregnancy and birth. If you have a Birth ball, you should bring it to the dedicated class, as only a few balls will be provided during the class.

The yoga is made up of a mix of:

Asanas          Physical movements

Pranayama   Breathing practices

Meditation    Stilling mind, calming inner self

Relaxation    Complete body and mind relaxation

Specific yoga postures for pregnancy are taught in a slow and controlled manner, using the breath as the focal point. This yoga is based on the teachings of Vanda Scaravelli.

Physiological changes in the pregnant body require careful and specific guidance throughout the pregnancy, and many classic yoga poses are modified to accommodate this.
The yoga practice together with baby awareness encourages the use of Optimal Fetal Positioning, the practice of correct maternal positioning in relation to the position of the baby.

What happens during Post Natal Class

These classes are designed to recover, rebalance and retone the body after birth.

Specific Yoga poses are taught with emphasis on abdominal and pelvic floor muscles, as well as classic yoga positions.  There is also time for discussion and advice on many post natal issues, and a chance for you to meet up with other new mothers and babies.

Bring your baby along to these classes to get support and advice as well as gentle post natal exercise.

What to bring for class

Please bring a yoga mat and three or more cushions/ yoga blocks, to help support you positions during yoga.

It is advisable to wear lose clothes and to bring something warm to wear for relaxation, like a jumper or a throw, especially on cool days.

It is important to eat only a light meal prior to class.

You are welcome to bring your Birth Ball to class.

These workshops, including refreshments, are desigend to give you a detailed insight into the birth process. We will be discussing the physiology and psychology of birth, options for painrelief, special situations, place for birth and early days after birth.

A handbook "Preparing for Active Birth Handbook", by Janet Balaskas, containing information on choices for birth, willl be on sale during the workshops. The handbook is ideal reading material for the preparation for your birth, and compliments the workshops. The cost for the handbook is £10.00.
